Do You Need Brake Service? Watch Out for These 10 Warning Signs

Need Brake Service

The brakes are an incredibly important part of a car’s overall performance and should be treated with the utmost care. They can be the difference between a safe and comfortable driving experience or, worst case scenario, a serious collision. Therefore, regular inspection and maintenance of your brakes and brake system are essential for staying safe on the road.

Being aware of the common signs that your car’s brakes need attention can avoid costly repairs and keep you out of danger. Read on for a list of common signs that signal the need for brake service, as well as how to address the issue quickly and efficiently. The most common signs of brake issues usually include noises, soft or spongy brake pedals, and increased stopping distance. If you notice any of these irregularities while driving, it’s important to get your brakes inspected right away.

Don’t Wait – Look for These Signs to Know When It’s Time to Get Your Brakes Inspected

1. Squealing or Grinding Noises

One of the most common signs that brakes need to be checked is squealing or grinding noises when pressing the brake pedal. This is usually caused by worn brake pads or hardware that have reached the end of their lifespan. Oftentimes this can be taken care of quickly with a simple inspection and pad replacement, however, it’s important to have this checked out by a qualified mechanic as soon as possible.

2. Vibrations

Another warning sign that your brakes may be in need of inspection is vibrations when the brake pedal is pushed. This can be caused by warped rotors, a sign that more extensive repairs may be needed. It’s important to have this assessed right away in order to prevent further damage to the brake system.

3. Pulling

If you notice that your car is pulling to one side when you brake, it could be a sign that you need to get your brakes serviced. This is usually caused by one of two issues: an unevenly worn brake pad or a loose wheel bearing. Both are serious issues that will need to be addressed right away, as they could cause the brakes to fail.

4. Unusual Noises

If you hear any unusual noises, such as clunking or thumping, when you press the brake pedal it could be a sign that you need to have your brakes serviced. This could be from a warped rotor or worn brake pads or hardware, both of which can be addressed relatively quickly with an inspection and possibly a replacement.

5. Soft or Spongy Pedal

If your brake pedal feels soft or spongy when pressed, this could be an indication that you need to get your brakes inspected. This could be from a leaking brake or master cylinder, or a brake line that is damaged and needs to be replaced. Regardless of the cause, it is important to have this assessed right away as a leaking brake system can lead to catastrophic failure.

6. Fluid Leaks

Another sign that you may need brake service is if you notice any fluid leaking from the brakes or the lines. This could be either brake fluid or hydraulic fluid, both of which could be an indication of a failing or damaged component in the brake system.

7. Warning Light on the Dashboard

If you notice a warning light on your dashboard, it could be an indication that you need to have your brakes inspected. This could be a warning that there is an issue with the brake system, so it is important to have this assessed right away.

8. Spots on the Driveway

If you notice any spots of fluid on your driveway, it could be a sign that you need to get your brakes serviced. This could be from a leaking brake line or a faulty component in the brake system that needs to be addressed.

9. Pulsing Brake Pedal

If you notice that your brake pedal pulsates when you press it, this could be an indication that you may need to have your brakes inspected. This could be caused by worn brake pads or an issue with the rotors, both of which will need to be addressed right away.

10. Unusual Smell

If you notice any unusual smells when pressing the brake pedal, this could be a sign that the brake system needs to be serviced. This could be from a leaking brake line or a failing component, both of which can be quickly addressed with an inspection and possible replacement.

Conclusion

Your brakes are one of the most important systems in your vehicle and need to be taken care of to ensure that you and your passengers stay safe on the roads. Being aware of the common warning signs that you may need to get your brakes inspected can prevent costly repairs in the long run. Keep an eye out for squealing or grinding noises, vibrations, pulling, unusual noises, and a soft or spongy pedal, and be sure to address them quickly to keep your brakes in top working order.

I started taking my car to Lai’s a couple years ago and haven’t taken it anywhere else since. As a woman that knows nothing about cars, I have been taken advantage of in the past so I do a lot of research when choosing a mechanic. Chris at the front always takes the time to make sure I understand what’s going on with my car. The team there is really willing to work with you, something that I have not been able to find at other mechanics. I cannot recommend them enough.

Penny Jan 1, 2026

Had an electrical issue with a busted cable, dropped it off in the morning and the issue was found and fixed in a couple hours by Lai's. Cost was not bad at all either. Another autoshop I called before told me with the busy time of year they wouldn't be able to get to it for 8-9 days. Will check with Lai's first next time.
